The Tumor Project
Tumor and Travel
What is Cancer? Some short Input.
We hardly know anybody who does not know someone or some stories of others having battled, fighting right now or are about to undergo some treatment for cancer. THis is because it accounted for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or nearly one in six death worldwide. Sometimes these stories end in a victory but sometimes not even the best treatment can beat it. Cancer does not destinguish Status so all stories tell between the line from a common Time with new good and bad experiences, long treatment sessions, tiredness, a lot of movement activies and maybe also some involvment in a new research study from scientists.
Cancer also called Tumour is abnormal cell growth of a before normal body cell with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body (WHO, NIH). These abnormal growth of normal cells starts because of transformations of normal body cells into tumouristic/malignant ones, due to exposure to physical, chemical or biological carcinogens. Such carcinogens can be ionizing radiation (physical) and ultraviolett from the sunlight (physical), asbestos, alcohol, aflatoxins (food contaminant) and arsenic (Water contaminant) (chemical) or infections from viruses, bacterias or parasites (biological). There is to differentiate between benign and malignant Tumor. Whilst benign cancercells do not spread they are better treatable, malignant cancercells are able to migrate to different body parts in a process called metastasis.
In our body such transformation from normal cells to "abnormal" cells happens quite regulary due to re above mentioned reasons. Some 50.000.000.000 to 70.000.000.000 cells are destroyed or are dying every day. Normaly our body immunsystem is able to diagnose and geht rid of the so "transformed" cells, before they turn cancerous. At an older age, when there is already a build up of risks factors, there is the tendency for cellular repair mechanisms to be less effective as in younger individuals. Such risk factors include use of tobacco and alcohol, unhealty diet, low physical inactivity, air pollution as well as some chronic infections.
Because there are more than 200 variations of Cancer, the Treatment is not universal but requires a specific treatment regimen. Also, due to the fast adaptiveness of cancercells research on new approaches will always be of high importance. But even with such top of the notch Science, dangerous tumors (like braintumor) can end a life in a short period of time since first diagnosis, whilst other tumors (like prostata) have a higher chance for a longer survival of the Patient. Researchers around are trying to find a cure and we are interested in their work.
Interest and Travel
Looking forward into the future we hope we are able to accompany Cancer researchers all over the globe along our travelroute and get to know them, their research and their labs better. We hope we are able to vlog and blog to bring cancer Science closer to all folks. We also hope to connect, inspire and motivate Researchers, Students and us normal folks in understanding and learning about cancer.
In order to do so, we try to explain the emerging cancer research once in a professional way, written by Selina who is herself a braintumor scientist, and on the other hand by Thomas who is a complete beginner in this matter and tries to explain what we learned and saw in an easy way.
