Thoughts and considerations
After extensive research, we defined our ideal expedition vehicle: a robust 4x4 with high clearance, a snorkel for rough terrain, and a durable timing chain. It needed to be simple, globally repairable, and from a brand with worldwide parts availability, luxury or overly complex European models were out, as were impractical electric vehicles. Inside, our mobile home required full insulation, standing height, and a comfortable bed (at least 2m x 1.3m). We prioritized a pop-up roof for extra space and a self-contained layout with indoor cooking, a shower, and the ability to drive from the living area without stepping outside.
We initially sought a Toyota Land Cruiser, but Swiss prices were prohibitive. After evaluating many options for rust, paperwork, and fuel efficiency, we discovered a well-prepared Mitsubishi L300. With 210,000 km on the clock and already outfitted for an African tour by its previous owners, it met our core needs at a feasible cost. Our next post will introduce you properly to our newest family member and its custom interior.
